I say they block all ranged our melee from the front when in the offhand, but only 50% blast damage reduction. So Skeletons and Zombies can't hit you from the front while you have a shield in your main hand or offhand, and creepers only deal half damage. But sides and back take damage like regularly.

Yeah, my main village has 4-5. I think because they get stuck outside of the boundary then the villagers spawn a new one before it can come back
