21w03a is the sixth snapshot for Java Edition 1.17, and the first snapshot to be released in 2021. Released on January 20, it adds glow squids, glow ink sacs, glow lichen, glow item frames, and fixes some bugs.
Additions[]
- Glow Item Frame – a placeable entity that appears to have a glowing effect, although it does not affect the light level of the surrounding area
- Glow Lichen – a naturally occurring light source found rarely in caves, obtainable only with shears. It has a light level of 7.
- Glow Ink Sac – dropped by the Glow Squid mob when killed. It can be used to craft glow item frames and make text glow on signs
- Glow Squid and its corresponding spawn egg – originating from Minecraft Earth, it is an underwater mob that acts like a Squid but does not spawn naturally yet. Axolotls will attack them without provocation.
Changes[]
- Sign – can now be tinted with glow ink sacs to make the text illuminated
- Changed the death message for dying from falling on a stalagmite.
- Servers – the error message for failing to connect to the authentication servers now says "not reachable" instead of "down for maintenance"
