Alex Swaps In!
—Introduction tagline. (Alex).

Alex is a character who appears as an skin swap for Steve in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.A zombie and an enderman also appear as skin swaps.

Information[]

  • Similar to Mr. Game & Watch, Alex is lifted directly from his home game; her model and movement appearing identical to that of Minecraft.
  • Steve's weapon stays in his hand momentarily depending on the move she uses.
  • Steve can crawl.
  • Other alternate costumes are taken from the default selection of skins offered to players on the "Legacy Console" and "Bedrock" Editions of Minecraft, namely "Tennis" and "Scottish" Steve and Alex.

Moveset[]

  • Alex has a crafting mechanic, where she can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade his weapons by placing a crafting table.
  • Alex can place blocks, which crack and break automatically overtime after placing them. The only blocks she can place are dirt, oak planks, stone, iron blocks, TNT (as down special), and magma blocks (as up smash). Depending on the stage, the dirt can appear as white wool, sand (which does not fall), or ice. Crafting Tables can be spawned behind the playing field, which can linger after use, and Anvils are used as her down air and down throw when still having iron.
  • Alex has been shown using several tools from Minecraft in combat, and can seemingly use multiple weapons for the same attack. As of now, which directional input each showcased attack belongs to is speculative, but the follo
  • wing examples are clearly shown off in the presentation:
    • She is shown using swords and various other weapons for tilt attacks, including his forward smash.
    • Her forward aerial is a downwards swing with a weapon.
    • Her up aerial is a quick swing above his head with a weapon.
    • Her down smash causes him to place lava out of a lava bucket in front of him, then behind.
    • Her up special is an Elytra, which he uses to glide.
  • Her final smash begins with her placing a giant piston in front of her, which extends to catch enemies in the attack. A cinematic plays where the affected fighter is launched into a dark building filled with TNT, where they are attacked by Creepers and Zombies, producing multiple explosions. This is named the House of Boom.

Triva[]

  • The Zombie alternate costume uses the original texture, though there was a texture update in 1.14 of Minecraft. This is possibly so that it better matches with the Steve texture.
  • The Enderman alternate costume also was slightly altered to match the dimensions of Steve, as the character is much taller in the original game. It is similar to a Skeleton.
  • Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman's reveal trailer contains multiple references to Minecraft:
    • The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
      • The Enderman also hides from the rain on Distant Planet. It references the fact that Endermen can receive damage from water in Minecraft.
    • Wolf throwing the Zombie causes it to drop meat, a reference to Rotten Flesh, which is their most common drop.
      • Additionally, wolves in Minecraft can be tamed and can help the player in combat.
    • Zombie is revealed breaking down a wooden door, which is an ability that Zombies have in Minecraft when playing on the hardest difficulty.
  • Steve is the fourth fighter to have one of their victory animations shown in their reveal trailer, the first three being Dark Samus, Joker, and Terry.
  • Minecraft also started out as an indie game in the past few years (mostly the Java Edition recently), making Steve the first playable character originated from an indie game, and the fourth indie game character to be featured (as a whole) in the game (the first being Sans from Undertale, Cuphead from Cuphead, and Shovel Knight from Shovel Knight).
  • Zombie and Enderman are the second and third playable fighters in the series to be generic enemies, the first being Piranha Plant.
    • Also after Piranha Plant, Steve/Alex is the second DLC characters to not have any voice clips.
