Items are objects that, excluding string and redstone dust, can't be placed. They can, however, be placed in item frames and may be usable (such as weapons and tools), used in crafting, or as an unprepared or ready-to-eat source of food.

Source[]

Items are collected by either running over them where they hover on the ground, picked up from a chest, or when a player crafts the items themselves. Items are stored in a player's inventory until they use the item, drop it upon death, or store it in a container such as a chest.

Discarding Items[]

To drop an item in the PC version of Minecraft, a player can press Q (default), while holding the item in their hand (CTRL+Q for an entire stack).

In Minecraft: Pocket Edition, this can be done by pressing and holding down on the item's icon on the action bar for a few seconds. This can also be done by going into your inventory, tapping the item you wish to drop, and tapping the bottom left corner. This is much quicker and efficient. A dropped item will remain on the ground where it was dropped, before despawning after five minutes of being picked up again.
