The Lily Pad first appeared in the Beta 1.9 pre-release. It can only be placed on water and drops when destroyed. Players can stand on lily pads like it is a solid block.
Lily pads can be instantly mined with anything. Boats also destroy lily pads if the boat touches the lily pad.
