A Llama is a neutral animal mob that can be tamed and used to transport items in a carried chest.

Mechanics[]

Llamas spawn in small herds in mountain and savanna biomes. They come in four different color variations, with two of the variations possible for each biome. They can be tamed like horses, but cannot be controlled by players and cannot wear saddles. Instead, once tamed, a lead can be attached to the llama which allows it to follow a player. Up to ten other nearby llamas will also follow the llama wearing the lead, forming a "caravan".

Llamas can be equipped with chests which will allow players to store their goods in a mobile container; however, the amount of storage space available is randomized, and it depends on the llama. If they are equipped with carpets, then they will have a costume. The costume depends on the color of the carpet.

If a player or mob attacks a llama, the llama will spit on its attacker. Llamas will also automatically attack any untamed wolves that happen to stay too close. The wolf in question will fight back depending on the same data tag that controls the number of slots in a llama chest.

It should be noted that llamas are the only neutral mobs that can deal damage to players when they are in Peaceful mode.

Breeding[]

Tamed llamas can be bred using hay bales. Both llamas must be tamed before they can breed.

Trader Llama[]

A Trader Llama is a tamed variant of a wild llama, which appears along-side wandering traders as of the release of update 1.14. These llamas spawn in groups of 1–2, wearing decorations similar to what the wandering trader wears, and will be leashed to the wandering trader at its outpost. They will attack any nearby illagers, zombies (including Zombified piglin, and any other zombie variants), but will not attack ravagers. If a player attacks their wandering trader owner, they will attack that player.

Trivia[]

  • Jeb hosted a vote over whether the llama or alpaca should be added, and the llama won the vote.
  • Although they can be ridden, Llamas cannot be controlled.
