Melons are blocks that grow from fully grown melon seeds that give several melon slices when broken. They were first introduced in Minecraft Java Edition Beta 1.8 "Adventure Update". As of Java Edition 1.7.2, they can be found naturally spawning in jungle biomes and on some village farms. Melons are arguably the best kind of crop because one stalk can produce an infinite amount of melons, and the melons slices come plentifully, about 1-4 slices per block, in which can be used to craft seeds which you can use to make more melons.
Behavior[]
When destroyed, melons will drop 3–7 melon slices. Melons will also be destroyed when a piston of any kind pushes a melon block. If seeds and sticky pistons are placed in the correct formation, they can be used to auto harvest melons. One melon slice can be crafted into a melon seed.
Melons are naturally generated in Jungle Biomes, inside "Stem farm" rooms of Woodland Mansions, and in savanna Villages.
Endermen can pick up melon blocks and drop them upon death without them breaking into melon slices.

Farming[]
Melons can be somewhat difficult to farm. They will have a central stem that slowly grows until it reaches its maximum size at which point a melon will spawn on one of the adjacent blocks. The stem requires an air block or a transparent block above it to produce melons; the resulting melon does not. Melon stems take around 10 to 30 minutes (0.5 to 1.5 Minecraft days) to fully develop. Despite melon stems needing to be planted on farmland, melon blocks can grow onto dirt, grass, or farmland. If there is no dirt, grass or farmland around the melon stem, a melon cannot grow. Another melon will grow in place of any other harvested melon. Any stem adjacent to a melon block will connect to it. Bone meal can cause a melon stem to become fully-grown, but cannot produce a melon immediately. Melons are best grown in rows with one trench of water beside them, with two stems being on both sides. This will produce the maximum amount of melons and will keep them from being unable to produce melons.
Mining[]
A Melon can be harvested with any tool or by hand, but an axe, followed by a sword is the fastest.

Trivia[]
- Two melon stems can sometimes be connected to one melon that grows beside them.
- Prior to 1.7.2, melons were harder to obtain because they did not spawn naturally, so players had to find melon seeds inside of abandoned mineshafts in order to farm melons.
- Despite being in farms in some villages, farmer villagers will not harvest melons. The same reason goes to pumpkins.
