Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition is the version of Minecraft developed by Other Ocean Interactive and Mojang Studios for the New Nintendo 3DS series, but not the original 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS. It was released on the Nintendo eShop simultaneously in North America and Japan on September 13, 2017, just hours after its announcement during a Nintendo Direct. The game was released worldwide on September 20, 2018.
Despite the initial release being a fork of Pocket Edition alpha 0.15.4, it has several additions, tweaks, and missing features compared to that version, and was being developed separately from the Bedrock Edition. It has no relation to the Legacy Console Editions and is mostly equivalent to Pocket Edition 1.1.5.
This version was discontinued, with version 1.9.19 (released on January 15, 2019) being the last version.
The new Nintendo 3DS Edition lacks online multiplayer, but local multiplayer was added in the 1.4 update. World types are default and Superflat, with a height limit of 128 and sizes ranging from small (672x672), medium (1344x1344), and large (2016x2016). The size of the world cannot be changed once it is created. The ratio of The Nether to the Overworld is 1:3.
There is a mob cap that is much stricter than Legacy Console Edition: only 24 enemies, 24 animals, 16 squid, and 16 villagers can exist at one time.
Instead of including the map item, the map and the player's coordinates are displayed on the touch screen, which is also used for inventory management and crafting.
The New Nintendo 3DS Edition includes seven skin packs by default, and there are more skin packs available for purchase in the in-game store. In addition, several texture packs and a couple mash-up packs are included by default or are available through the in-game store.
- This is the only edition of the game wherein the Splash Texts are not slanted and above the logo.
- Due to a limitation in memory on the New Nintendo 3DS system, the render distance is set to 6 chunks of view distance and cannot be changed.
- Despite the update releasing in 2018, this version of the game never received the Update Aquatic unlike the other versions.
