Minecraft Dungeons is an action-adventure role-playing dungeon crawler video game developed by Mojang Studios, Xbox Game Studios, and Double Eleven and was released on May 26, 2020.[1][2][3] The game supports up to four players and features various new weapons, items, and mobs as well as a variety of environments to explore. It has specific quests and locations, along with procedurally-generated elements.

The game is available for PlayStation 4, Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Game Pass in two editions: the base edition, available for US$19.99; and the Hero Edition, available for US$29.99. The latter includes the Hero Pass, which includes a cape cosmetic for your hero, a chicken pet, and free access to the upcoming DLC.[4]

Beta sign-ups and pre-orders were available through Minecraft's website from March 25 to April 24, 2020.[5][6]

Gameplay[]

The game supports up to four players and features various new weapons, items, and mobs, as well as a variety of environments to explore and a quest that'll see players facing off against the main antagonist called the "Arch-Illager". The game has specific quests and locations, along with procedurally-generated elements. Players are not restricted to one class and can pick up more armor or weapons and use them. Players do not build or mine, because the game is focused on action/adventure. The game takes place both above ground and below. Players can replay levels they have beaten. There is a camp "hub world" That takes place in a part of the tutorial level, Squid Coast. Levels are procedurally-generated, and Mojang was considering world seeds.[7]

The game was developed in Unreal Engine 4.[8]

Development[]

The game was announced at MINECON Earth 2018.[9] It is a visually enhanced version of the base Minecraft game with a different gameplay style.[10] On September 17, 2019, Double Eleven announced that they are assisting Mojang and Xbox Game Studios with development, particularly with the console versions and multiplayer.[11]

The game was supposed to release in April 2020,[12] but was changed to May 26, 2020, due to the outbreak of COVID-19.[13]
