Pre-classic is the name given to the prototype versions developed before Classic. It was the very first development phase in Minecraft, lasting for a week. The phase was originally named "Cave Game" until the game was changed to "Minecraft: Order of the Stone" then to "Minecraft". It was later succeeded by Classic. While the version shown was never publicly available to play, it was developed from May 10, 2009, and showcased on May 13, 2009. It is the first known version of Minecraft, or Cave Game, as it was referred to in this time period. At this time only a few people even knew Minecraft existed.

History[]

  • May 10, 2009: Game first developed.
  • May 12, 2009: Fixed a performance issue.
  • May 13, 2009:
    • (17:41 UTC): Notch made it only update two chunks per frame. The game generates blank chunks and the FPS is inaccurate.
    • (17:48 UTC): Game now runs smoother.
    • (17:51 UTC): Chunks have been changed from 8×8×8 to 16×16, and chunks near the player will load first. This was the build that Notch showcased on his YouTube channel.

Features[]

General[]

The world is 256×256×64.

Gameplay[]

The game was simple, do whatever you want. Easy coding allowed the player to press LMB to mine, while RMB was to place, like todays Minecraft. There was only one layer of grass, which looked like a green, simple textured block. The rest was cobblestone, then the void. The entire world was just a block, pure and simple. There was no sun, no moon, no npc, no nothing, just an empty world to do whatever you want. Out of cobblestone.
