“Zombie Spawns In!”—Introduction tagline (Zombie). Zombie is an Alternate Costume that appears with Steve, Alex, and Enderman in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Information[]
- Similar to Mr. Game & Watch, Zombie is lifted directly from his home game; his model and movement appearing identical to that of Minecraft. The layout of the texture is the exact same as skins from 1.8 onwards, though not having it all used due to Steve's model not using the upper layers. The Swedish Alex alternative costume is the only one with a hat layer, and it is not a full one.
- Steve's weapon stays in his hand momentarily depending on the move he uses.
- Steve can crawl.
- Other alternate costumes are taken from the default selection of skins offered to players on the "Legacy Console" and "Bedrock" Editions of Minecraft, namely "Tennis" and "Scottish" Steve and Alex.
Moveset[]
- Zombie has a crafting mechanic, where he can mine the ground to obtain materials and upgrade his weapons by placing a crafting table.
- Available weapons and equipment include swords (jab, forward tilt/mobile jab, neutral air, short hop forward and back airs, and forward smash), fishing rods (grabs and back throw), axes (up tilt, up air, mining wood), pickaxes (dash attack, forward and back air, and mining iron and stone), shovel (mining dirt), lava buckets (down smash), and flint & steel (down tilt). Weapons can be made of wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond.
- Zombie can place blocks, which crack and break automatically overtime after placing them. The only blocks he can place are dirt, oak planks, stone, iron blocks, TNT (as down special), and magma blocks (as up smash). Depending on the stage, the dirt can appear as white wool, sand (which does not fall), or ice. Crafting Tables can be spawned behind the playing field, which can linger after use, and Anvils are used as his down air and down throw when still having iron.
- Additionally, Zombie can place redstone and a wooden pressure plate to detonate TNT. This triggers Special Zoom. He also has the ability to produce minecarts, rails, powered rails, and redstone torches as his side special.
- Zombie has been shown using several tools from Minecraft in combat, and can seemingly use multiple weapons for the same attack. As of now, which directional input each showcased attack belongs to is speculative, but the following examples are clearly shown off in the presentation:
- He is shown using swords and various other weapons for tilt attacks, including his forward smash.
- His forward aerial is a downwards swing with a weapon.
- His up aerial is a quick swing above his head with a weapon.
- His down smash causes him to place lava out of a lava bucket in front of him, then behind.
- His up special is an Elytra, which he uses to glide.
- His final smash begins with him placing a giant piston in front of him, which extends to catch enemies in the attack. A cinematic plays where the affected fighter is launched into a dark building filled with TNT, where they are attacked by Creepers and Zombies, producing multiple explosions. This is named the House of Boom.
Triva[]
- Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman's reveal trailer contains multiple references to Minecraft:
- The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
- The Enderman also hides from the rain on Distant Planet. It references the fact that Endermen can receive damage from water in Minecraft.
- Wolf throwing the Zombie causes it to drop meat, a reference to Rotten Flesh, which is their most common drop.
- Additionally, wolves in Minecraft can be tamed and can help the player in combat.
- Zombie is revealed breaking down a wooden door, which is an ability that Zombies have in Minecraft when playing on the hardest difficulty.
- The Enderman picking up the crate references their affinity for picking up blocks and carrying them around.
- Steve is the fourth fighter to have one of their victory animations shown in their reveal trailer, the first three being Dark Samus, Joker, and Terry.
- Minecraft also started out as an indie game in the past few years (mostly the Java Edition recently), making Steve the first playable character originated from an indie game, and the fourth indie game character to be featured (as a whole) in the game (the first being Sans from Undertale, Cuphead from Cuphead, and Shovel Knight from Shovel Knight).
- Zombie and Enderman are the second and third playable fighters in the series to be generic enemies, the first being Piranha Plant.
- Also after Piranha Plant, Steve is the second DLC character to not have any voice clips.
